Wimbledon Introduces Video Review Technology This Season.

Wimbledon court with video review system

The tournament joins the American and Aussie Opens in implementing replay technology.

Replay technology are set to arrive at The Championships for the 2025 edition.

Athletes are granted the option to question specific calls from the official, mirroring the practice currently in place at both the American Grand Slam and the Australian Open.

This technology is slated for use on Centre Court and Court One throughout the tournament and on the other four featured courts when they are staging singles matches.

This development arrives only a season following the All England Club introduced ELC, which terminated the centuries-old tradition of line officials.

Scope of Challenges

Competitors cannot to dispute the call of the ELC system, but they can request the umpire to re-examine specific situations, including:

  • If a ball has bounced twice.
  • If a shot touched an opponent's racquet or person on the way past.
  • Potential hindrance at the conclusion of a point.

Notably, there is an unlimited number on the amount of challenges a competitor can ask for.

Case in Point

A recent example took place in Indian Wells recently, where Daniil Medvedev initiated the review system against his opponent.

The British player conceded it was a difficult call for the umpire, but thought his rival had "used the regulations quite well."

Official Aurelie Tourte viewed a video and ruled the player was responsible for interference, awarding the rally to Medvedev.

Wider Implementation

Video reviews are not exclusive to Grand Slams. The system has been in use at the US Open for two years and the Aussie Open since 2025.

Furthermore, it is increasingly prevalent on the WTA circuit, and by next season the ATP circuit will have video reviews in place at all of its tournaments.

Other Changes

Another change at Wimbledon this year will be the introduction of graphical cues on displays to support the audio calls from the ELC system.

This solves situations where fans have sometimes been unsure if a ball was out or in.

Finally, with precisely a century of days to go until the start of the tournament, the AELTC have further revealed an increase in daily capacity at the qualifiers in the qualifying venue.
