Tetris Didn't Win at This Gaming Ceremony — An Additional Classification Could Fix That

Each time a significant honors show draws close, you'll find a demand for introducing of new categories to acknowledge underappreciated efforts and satisfy the passions of enthusiasts dedicated to specific genres.

Another commentator made the case advocating for terror-themed awards. It would be amazing. So would strategy board titles, this being someone's personal cause. However, I must insist if I try to elbow in front since similar to single-minded supporters, there's a strong justification backing this proposal stands as crucial and important of all. This is the request: We need a category for puzzle games.

Categorizing Game Types

Categorizing art by genre isn't exact; it’s very subjective, and inevitably spark debates resulting in unclear classifications. It's understandable that film award organizations avoid this approach. However, it represents an unavoidable compromise in the world of gaming, showing incredible range they barely qualify as a single art form.

For the full spectrum of gaming accomplishments to receive acknowledgment, while allowing diverse titles to receive proper recognition, specific award classifications remain vital.

Existing Game Classification System

Leading game ceremonies offer these award types recognizing Action-oriented games, Action/Adventure, RPG experiences, Combat games, Sim/Strategy, plus athletic and racing experiences. Between them, these six categories successfully include numerous genres, making space possible accommodating various experiences.

This doesn't apply to puzzle games. There’s simply nowhere to accommodate them. Consider three of outstanding current releases, all very different: the architectural riddles of one title, fast-paced pattern recognition in a different title, and the sweetly sociological logic puzzles from additional release. What category would fit them among existing types? Simply put, no category fits.

Recognition Challenges

Many instances occur excellent brain-teasers published annually lacking appropriate categories in entertainment awards, unless they happen to qualify award groups including Mobile Game, VR/AR Game, or the extremely competitive independent game categories.

  • A renowned logic title wasn’t nominated completely in 2014
  • Another imaginative release received no nominations in 2019
  • Well-received sorting experience received no acknowledgment that year
  • Only a few logic titles scraped into niche award types

Significance of Puzzle Games

Frequently they represent small games, but the art behind logic titles is of massive significance. Iconic mobile puzzle games rank among most popular titles in the world continuing this trend for over a decade.

The legendary block-stacking game rivals famous sandbox experiences for the title of most purchased experience; it also contends as greatest title ever. Logic titles represent cornerstones for gaming as medium, and engaging with diverse game types.

Recommendation and Reasoning

Puzzle games wouldn’t have this problem. You could fill multiple candidates with fascinating, diverse, deserving games each ceremony simply — actually, with challenge, given the need to exclude numerous deserving experiences.

To emphasize again, these are games that otherwise have no home at major gaming awards. Brain-teaser creators operate at the demanding boundary game development, creating some of essential manifestations within interactive entertainment. Similar to cinema stunt performers, they deserve recognition. Don't make them wait 35 years.
